Tin-Can Phone Science Experiment

Talking through a tin can is a wonderful science experiment, not just to teach children how sound waves travel, but it can also illustrate how important concepts are passed from generation to generation. Your students’ grandparents may have made tin-can phones as children, so this could be a great conversation starter for the next visit. As Psalm 103:17 says, “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.”

Materials

– Two clean empty tin cans
– String
– Nail
– Hammer
– Scissors

Instructions

1. Using the nail and hammer, make a hole in both cans.

2. Cut the string so that it can reach from one end of the room to the other, but is pulled tight.

3. Thread the string through the holes of each can (Make sure the flat ends are facing each other and the empty ends are facing out.), tying a knot inside the can.

4. Stand on one end of the room, pulling, so the string is tight. Say something into the can.

5. Have the person with other can tell repeat the message.

Explanation

When you talk into the can the sound waves vibrate along the string and send the message into the other can, making them work like a telephone.

Application

Faith traditions and family values are often passed from one generation to the other. Even if your grandparents aren’t living anymore, their message can be passed along through family members. They are like the string; the grandparent is the can, and you are the other can!

Wisdom gets passed along like Psalm 103:17 states: “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.”

I would say to find something that afectfs your community or your school. Perhaps a social science idea?I live in NYC and there are people from all over the world here. I would do something like ask different people that are commonly grouped together questions about racism, races, income, etc etc Then see how people fare across the boardDid women answer commonly vs men? Did Asians answer commonly vs. Blacks? Then whatever common answers you have, you can draw conclusions from what their collective perceptions are and see if stereotypes or common beliefs are true.Just something off of the top of my head. Doesn’t require a lot of equipment probably good and thorough planning.
