One of the most frustrating parts of Christmas is figuring out which bulb is out on the string of Christmas lights. This Christmas science experiment about how Christmas lights work can get kids thinking about teamwork and being a part of a family.
Materials:
• String of Christmas lights
Instructions:
1. Plug the lights in and hold them up so the kids can see.
2. Pull one of the bulbs out.
3. What happens? Does just one light go out?
Explanation:
Generally, one nonfunctioning bulb on a strand of Christmas lights will cause either all the bulbs to go out or all those in a series on the string. This happens because most strings of Christmas lights are on what is called a series circuit. This means the electricity comes in through the outlet and travels, one by one, from one light to the next. If you pull one of the lights out you break the circuit and the rest of the lights will go out as well.
Application:
Jesus was often a part of a team. He was born into a family; he traveled with the disciples, and most importantly, he is a party of the Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are a pretty important team. The holidays are a time when families come together and we have the opportunity to see ourselves in a team. Like the Christmas lights, families are teams, need everyone to do their part for things to go smoothly. It could be setting the table, walking the dog, or maybe something more important, like talking with relatives while Mom and Dad make dinner. Whatever the role is, it’s important. Like the lights, everyone has to work together so the good energy can flow.
