“…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things…” ~ Philippians 4:8

The first meetings of the Pilgrims and Indians were unified and peaceful, with only the best of intentions. Make these s’mores for peace and unity, which are cute and will definitely get kids’ attention, as you discuss the first Thanksgiving and how it has molded our lives today.

Thanksgiving Snacks:  S’mores for Unity and Peace

Fall holidays – especially Thanksgiving – inspire a lot of ideas for fun fall and Thanksgiving snacks. These s’mores are not only fun, they are also a creative way to initiate a history lesson about Pilgrims and Native Americans.

Ingredients

– Graham crackers
– Jumbo and mini marshmallows
– Chocolate frosting (can be storebought)
– fudge stripes dark chocolate cookies
– Assorted candy (caramels, yellow chewy candy, chocolate/peanut butter cups)
– Mini chocolate chips
– Fruit flavored snacks
– Lollipop sticks
– Round cookie cutter

Instructions

1. Break one graham cracker in half along the markings in the middle.

2. Use a round cookie cutter and press down on the graham cracker.

3. Do the same with the other half.

4. Cut a jumbo marshmallow in half with scissors.

5. Push the lollipop stick in the marshmallow.

6. Place the chocolate frosting in a plastic bag and snip a small hole in the corner to squeeze out the icing.

7. Squeeze the chocolate frosting around the graham cracker in a swirl.

8. Place the jumbo marshmallow half on top. Squeeze more of the frosting on top of the marshmallow.

9. Place the other graham cracker round on top and let it dry for about five to 10 minutes.

10.To make eyes, cut a mini marshmallow in half. Attach 2 mini chocolate chips  on the tops of the mini marshmallow halves with the frosting. Then attach the marshmallows on the face with the frosting.

11.Make the mouth with the chocolate frosting.

12.To make the hair, take 1 caramel and put it in the microwave for four seconds. Then flatten it out with your fingers. Place it on the top of your round graham cut-out and then cut around the edges to fit, using kitchen scissors. Cut the bottom to look like hair.

13.Attach the graham cracker with the frosting. You can cut off a piece of the caramel scraps to make a nose by just shaping it with your fingers.

Lesson

These two s’mores are a Pilgrim and a Native American. When the Pilgrims landed they found a friendly group of Indians called the Wampanoag. Their leader, Massasoit, supplied them with food. The bond that was formed between the Pilgrims and the Indians gradually weakened. But the peace and unity that first existed kept the Pilgrims believing that they truly had found God’s will in the Plymouth Rock landing.

Let’s eat and remember to try to keep our lives in peace and unity, which the Pilgrims pursued in the spirit of Apostle Paul: “¦whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things (Philippians 4:8).

    These are so cute!
I think it is important to use food as often as possible to reinforce lessons with kids. Taste (and other senses lie smell and hearing) cement things into our memories!
