Sunday School Program – Harvest Time

Here are several ideas to use with your 6-8 year olds in your Sunday school program to teach about how God helps us in our daily lives. Use the end of summer and harvest time to show how God provides all the elements to make it possible for farmers to grow our food.

God in Action:
Today discuss the idea of a harvest. What is a harvest? Who does the harvesting? What is harvested? How does the weather influence the harvest – briefly touch on the lives of the farmers who depend upon the weather to grow their produce so that they can pay their bills at the end of the harvest.

Where does the weather come from. The answer you are looking for is “God”. What does God send that helps the harvest? What do the growing seeds need in order to grow?

Movement:
Split the group into two halves. One half will be the seeds, the other the rain. Have the seeds curl up very small on the floor, then have the “rain” sprinkle amongst them (stepping carefully among the seeds waving their arms gently up and down as if being rain). As the rain comes down, have the seeds start to grow, uncurling very slowly until they are standing upright.

Craft: Small harvest basket.
Supply each child with a small basket and some marzipan in different colors. Provide pictures of various fruits and vegetables.
The children should use the marzipan to make small fruits and vegetables that they place in the baskets. They can take the baskets home at the end of the class.

Discussion:
Why do the children think that the harvest is important in the Church? (Important to give thanks to the Lord for the food he has provided from the earth).

Art: Harvest Bowl Picture
Make a large bowl shape out of newspaper, brown packaging paper, or construction paper and glue this to a slightly larger sheet. Supply construction paper in various sizes, scissors and glue. The children should each draw and cut out 2 or 3 fruit or vegetable shapes that are then glued into the harvest bowl. Or, alternatively you could scale this down so that the children create their own harvest bowl picture.
