Sunday School Lesson Plans – Difference Between Beauty and Vanity

These Sunday school lesson plans clarify the difference between beauty and vanity. It is an important distinction that must be addressed.

Beauty is that which we find attractive, for one reason or another.  It is something to which we are drawn, which we want to be around, and which we admire.  Vanity is the adoration of that beauty, the focus on it, and the belief that we are more beautiful than another person.  It is an abuse of the beauty that God has put on the earth.

He created beauty to be enjoyed and admired, but He never intended it to take our focus away from Him.  By keeping ourselves occupied trying to achieve or maintain that beauty, we lose sight of the thing that really matters—making a beautiful soul instead of a beautiful face.

Does this mean that as Christians, we should pay no attention to how we look or the clothes we wear?  Not exactly.  To function in this world and do the work God calls us to do, there are standards we must adhere to, such as wearing clean clothes and maintaining good hygiene.  Wanting beautiful things is not a sin in itself, as long as you recognize that its beauty is fleeting and will not make you spiritually happy.
