This Bible game I call “Hippity Hop Scotch” is perfect for helping students learn the Bible. Part of our relationship with Jesus is showing that we trust Him. The more we trust in Him, the better we will get to know him and the more power we will have for our lives. Let’s hop into our faith!

Bible Game: “Hippity Hop Scotch”

MATERIALS NEEDED:
Masking tape, sharpie pen, scripture answer key

LEARNING STYLE:
Hands-On

PREPARATION:
Make a hopscotch set up on the floor. In the center of each square, write words of the scripture as demonstrated in the Answer Key. Write the words needed to get to the top of the hopscotch grid right side up. Write the words needed to get back to the bottom of the hopscotch grid upside down (so students can see them on the way back down). Have candy prizes available. Instead of having students toss a stone onto the hopscotch grid and skipping that square, simply place a candy kiss or piece of candy at the top of the grid which students can pick up on the way there.

BIBLE GAME OBJECT:
To be able to go up and back in the hopscotch set up, hopping while reciting and getting the least amount of errors of all students.

BIBLE GAME INSTRUCTIONS:
Say the scripture verse four or five times with students and then have one or two repeat it back. Make sure to include the verse. Then have students line up and try to say the verse while hop-scotching. The words you have written on tape will serve as reminders. Encourage them to go slowly at first!

Answer Key:
Seven “rounds” of answers are supplied so the game can be used more than once. You can do two on a Sunday or use it several times during the year.

(Number at beginning is number of words)
ROUND 1   12 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

ROUND 2   14 Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

ROUND 3   15 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

ROUND 4   24 By faith we have been made acceptable to God. And now, because of our Lord Jesus Christ, we live at peace [a] with God. Romans 5:1

ROUND 5   25 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

ROUND 6  31 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

ROUND 7   33 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

This sounds like a great game to play with my Bible Drill group. I may use it with sections of the books of the Bible and also with our required verses. Also thinking of doing it outside in parking lot with chalk, weather permitting. Thanks for sharing!

I used this idea teaching the ten plagues of Egypt. I modified it to a table-top hopscotch board and the kids “hopped” with their fingers. My class of ALL 4th grade BOYS loved it and keep asking for it with other lessons.
