In this science experiment, we’ll show that even though we might feel trapped or things might seem difficult, we are actually free in Jesus! Discussing how the little bird is free even though he looks caged is a great chance to ask children where they feel caged and where Jesus makes them free.
Materials
– Two 3-by-5-inch cards (or larger)
– A pencil or straw
– Scotch tape
– Dark marker
Instructions
1. Draw a birdcage on one card. Make it as close to the size of the card as possible.
2. Draw a bird on the other card.
3. Tape both cards with the image facing out to the pencil or straw, so the bird is on one side and the cage is on the other.
4. Hold up the pencil and spin it in between the palms of your hands or fingers.
Explanation
God gave us very powerful brains. Our brains want to make sense of what they see, so they join images together to makes sense of them. For example the cartoons we watch on TV aren’t really moving images but lots of flickering lights that our eyes join together and make sense of. When they do this we see a cartoon. This bird is the same way.
Application
There are lots of times we think we are trapped, when really, Jesus has made us free. One example of this is when other kids at school are doing something we know is not right. We might feel like we have to go along with them because we need them to like us. But really we are children of God, and he loves us. We are free to follow him and do what we know is right because our rewards come from him, not our friends!
