Try these free Sunday school activities and discussions with your 9-11 year olds. This is a perfect time to have them start to think about and discuss the true meaning of Thanksgiving.
Sunday School Activities for Thanksgiving
Story:
Today, tell the story of the Pilgrims. Not just the first Thanksgiving, but also why they left England.
Discussion 1:
Do the students understand what the right to choose religion means? Discuss how it would be to be in a country where you are told which religion you must be, and to believe something else. Put this into a context that they will understand – perhaps going to an extreme – for example, what if you were told that you could only wear orange clothes; all of your clothes had to be orange, everyday. What if you had to eat food that you hated but there was nothing else that you could eat without breaking a law and going to prison?
Activity 1:
Give each student a piece of paper and ask them to write down why Thanksgiving is important – and why it is more than just a day when families get together to eat turkey and watch football.
Discussion 2:
Thanking God for guiding the Pilgrims to America is only one thing that we ought to thank God for. What other things are your students thankful for? How do we thank God for these things (prayers, taking care of things, walking a Christian path)?
Activity 2:
Give each student a piece of paper with the word “Thanksgiving” at the top. Tell them they have a time limit of 5 or 10 minutes depending on your remaining time constraints, and have them write as many words that they can find within the word “Thanksgiving” – for example “kin” “van”, etc.
