Bible Study Topics – Heart and Soul

One of the Bible study topics that is discussed at length in adult Sunday school or in Bible study groups is that of the body, the soul and the spirit.

We can look at our souls, bodies and heart as methods of feeling, sharing those feelings with God, and learning to walk more closely with Him. These elements are what makes us human and gives us the capability of  love, fear, adoration, and pain.  They give us the hope for salvation.

1 Samuel 1:10, 15
In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord.
…Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.  I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.”

This story tells of Hannah, who desperately wants a child.  We see how deeply the soul can feel emotion.  For Hannah, she was bitter, but not with a normal level of bitterness.  It had overtaken her completely, to the point of filling even her soul with the emotion.  However, instead of turning away from God in this moment of despair, she turned to Him, praying with such fervor that Eli, a priest, thought that she must be drunk.  When he confronts her for her behavior, she tells him that she is deeply troubled and that she has been searching for God during this time.

The beautiful conclusion of this story tells that God did hear Hannah’s cry and provided a son for her, whom she named Samuel.  Because her soul cried out to God, He came to her and provided her a son, whom she entrusted to God’s care and dedicates to the temple and to the Lord.

If we too allow our souls to connect with God, we will find an answer to our prayers, even if it is not the answer we think we want.
