The mystery of the Trinity is one of Christianity’s best and most confusing tenets of belief. In these Bible study lessons, we will explore the Bible’s treatment of the Trinity, what it means in our lives, and why it requires faith.
The Trinity refers to the three aspects or manifestations of one God: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. Christians believe that there is only one divine God but that the divinity is shared between three people, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who together make up one divine being. The Trinity is a subject that your Sunday school class will discuss at length.
There appears to be much contradiction in the Bible when it comes to the Trinity, because scholars from all religions can point to different passages and show them as proof for or against the existence of the Trinity.
In the Hebrew Scriptures, or the Old Testament, God is seen as one divine being, apart from whom there is no legiti-mate God or divinity. In the New Testament, Jesus is presented as both God and man, joining with God the Father, the God of the Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus is clearly seen as part of God in divinity.
The New Testament also references the Holy Spirit frequently. The Holy Spirit is often mentioned with Jesus and God, but no where does the Bible actually say that the three of them share the one divinity of God.
