Bible Study Lessons – God Protects Us from A Cold World

Here is an object lesson to use for your Bible study lessons using bedding. I use this to teach how God protects us from a cold world.

Bible Study Object Lesson: God Protects Us from A Cold World

BIBLE STUDY MESSAGE:
The cold floor is supplemented with a rug, blankets and pillows to illustrate how God provides us comfort in a hard, cold world.

RELATED SCRIPTURES:
John 14:16, John 10:27-29

OBJECTS NEEDED:
Blankets – enough so that every child can snuggle with friends. Pillows (bed or throw) so that each child can have one or share with another child. A large section of rug.

PREPARATION:
Keep the blankets and pillows in trash bags or out of sight. Keep the rug rolled up.

BIBLE STUDY LESSON:
If I told you to fall asleep right now on this hard, cold floor, how many of you would be able to?

Why not? Some will say they’re not tired. Let’s pretend we just did nine hours of homework and then ran two miles and then ate a big meal. Yawn really big. Okay, now it’s time to go to sleep. Go on, all of you – lie down on the floor and try to go to sleep. Bet at least one of you can do it.

Let them lie down and complain about the hard, cold floor.

The floor is a lot like this world. It can be uncomfortable at times. Not only can the temperature be cold, but people can be cold. Sometimes they’re not friendly when we’re lonely, and they can’t understand where we’re coming from.

And this world can be hard – like this floor. Just when we’re looking for life to get “soft,” it gets really hard. A loved one gets sick or dies. A parent loses a job. Friends who were always our friends move away or simply get new friends, and they’re not around any more. We lose a pet.

We know that to live in this world, things can go wrong at any time. But as Christians, we have good news. We know that everything will turn our right for us in the end. And in the meantime, while we’re here on earth, God provides ways for us to be warm and comfy and happy.

First, there is our salvation. Asking Jesus into our hearts is a foundation for all the good things that God has prepared for his children. A foundation is sort of like this rug. It’s big and covers all of us.

Get the rug, roll it out, and let students sit on it.

After we have the foundation of salvation, God promises us”¦ a comforter! Get out the blankets – if one is an actual comforter, that’s great! In John 14:16, Jesus says, And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever”¦ the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.” Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit, who wraps Himself around us and guides us
and gives us comfort.

Pass out the blankets and have students wrap up in them.

Finally, God provides protection in a hard cold world. In John 10:27-29, Jesus says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

That is soft and kind good news, very much like these soft pillows.

Pass out pillows. Let students put their heads on them while wrapped up in the blankets on the rug.

Now, the world is still a hard, cold place sometimes. But as Christians we have the foundation of salvation through Jesus. We have the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and we have the protection of our father. We could actually fall asleep on this rug if we had to, couldn’t we?
