Adult Sunday School Class Curriculum – Vanity & the Bible

The focus of this adult Sunday school class curriculum it to ask God for the ability to see the beauty in everyone, regardless of their outward appearance.

There are mentions of beauty all over in the Bible, from praises of God’s beauty to the exultation of Solomon’s beauty in the Songs, to Jesus saying beauty just is not that important.  Regardless of whether we want to admit it or not, admiring beauty is part of human nature.

We live in a world that places a high price on beauty.  From advertisements to television shows to the high school around the corner, people are doing everything they can to be beautiful.  There are even reality shows and entire television networks focused on making people look, feel, and act more attractive.  The Bible, however, has a very different view of what makes people beautiful the place for beauty in a Christian society.  We will discover what the Bible thinks of vanity and how Christians can keep their focus in a beauty driven society.

The Bible tells us that yes, beauty exists, and that beautiful things are gifts from God, but it also says that all people are gifts from God, made in His image, and are therefore all beautiful.  We all possess a soul, the most wonderful and beautiful part of our make-up, and no one can judge the beauty of the soul but God.  For that reason, it is our job to look for the beauty in every person, loving them as God loves them and finding the beauty within.

Appreciating that beauty is very different from vanity, as well.  Vanity is sinful because it is worshiping something other than God—beauty, even though beauty is a gift from God.  He meant it to be enjoyed, but within the context that it is from Him and therefore, He should be praised for its existence.  When we turn our focus to getting attention for our beauty or bewitching others into thinking that beauty is the key to happiness, we sin against God because we abuse His gifts and ignore that He deserves praise, not us.
