Childrens Bible Lessons – God Wants You to Fasten Yourself to Him

I like to use everyday household items to illustrate and inspire my students. The message of this children’s Bible lesson is to explain how God can be our best friend. He can be our best friend but we need to “sew” ourselves to Him with prayer–just like a button.

Bible Lesson: “God Wants You to Fasten Yourself to Him”

RELATED SCRIPTURES:
Matthew 10:16-20, 91:4-6 & 11

OBJECTS NEEDED:
One large button, threaded needle, a piece of fabric, scissors.

BIBLE LESSON PREPARATION:
Thread the needle. Tie a knot in the end.

BIBLE LESSON:
How many of you have a best friend? Get them to raise hands. What’s your best friend’s name?

Actually, you have a better best friend than that person. How many of you have ever thought of God as your best friend?

Of course God wants you to have friends down here on earth, but He wants to be your best friend. God can do great things for you that your best friends can’t.

God can give you the right things to say. Matthew 10:16-20 says that when you’re asked tough questions about right and wrong, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. “At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

God can protect you like earthly friends can’t. Psalm 91:4-6 says, “His faithfulness is like a shield or a city wall. You won’t need to worry about dangers at night or arrows during the day. And you won’t fear diseases that strike in the dark or sudden disaster at noon. Verse 11 says, “God will command his to protect
you wherever you go.”

But to have God as a best friend, we have to stay really close to Him. Sometimes that’s hard. It’s like”¦.pick up the button and the piece of fabric“¦a button that keeps falling off. Sometimes God can seem to fall away from us in the middle of the week.

What happens when a button comes off your clothing? What does your mom do? Many these days will have non-sewing moms, but some should say that Mom will sew it back on.

We have to “sew” Jesus close to our hearts. He’s like this pretty button. What we mean by that is we have to get in good habits, like praying every day for God’s wisdom and protection. A prayer is like this needle.

Hold up threaded needle. Prayers are sharp. And strong. They “poke through our tough situations.”

Poke the needle into the fabric. Pull the thread through a bit, then stop. The thread is like the Holy Spirit. It reaches out between God and us and helps draw us close to him.

Pull the needle farther until it meets the knot. If we pray every day, it’s like adding another stitch to hold the button to the fabric of our lives. Praying every day is strengthens our relationship with God.

Take three or four stitches. If your kids are old enough and responsible enough, you can have them sew a button to fabric of their own. Just warn against poking fingers or eyes!

If we’ve been praying daily for quite a while, God will be held to us with strength. Tie the button off and cut the thread. Pull on the needle a few times.
Jesus is like the button. Our prayers are like the needle. The Holy Spirit is like the thread. Our lives are the fabric. If we want Jesus to be close to us, we should sew in another stitch of his love and strength every day. How do we get closer to Jesus? Pray daily.
