The Bible and Science – Using the Wind’s Motion to Understand God’s Will

Many Christians wonder how to know the will of God in their lives. One wise man suggested, “It is easier to turn a moving ship than a still ship.” He meant that if
you keep moving and trying out various choices, God will “turn you” and get you moving in the right direction.

Using the Wind’s Motion to Understand God’s Will
Related Scriptures
John 3:8: “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Materials
– A calm day (not very windy)
– Your finger
– Water

Steps
– Go outside
– Stand in a place where you would not be protected from the wind
– Either wet your finger with water from a bottle or simply stick your finger in your mouth up to your knuckle and get it wet on all sides
– Stuck your finger into the air.

What happens to your finger?

Answer
Even if you can’t feel any wind, you should start to feel cold on one side of your finger – from the direction the slightest breeze is blowing from.

Explanation
Motion can speed up evaporation, the process of liquid turning to gas. The motion of the wind caused the spit or water on one side of your finger to evaporate more rapidly than what was on the other side. The evaporation will provide a cold sensation.

You can know which way the wind is blowing by determining which side of your finger turns cold first.

Understanding God
In John 3:8, Jesus compared the presence of God in a believer’s life to hearing the wind: “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not
know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

As Christians we have the great and wonderful gift of being able to sense, feel and even spiritually “hear” God in our lives. That doesn’t mean we understand Him all the time. Just like we can’t see the wind, we can’t always see where God is taking us. We can get the direction of the wind by sticking a wet finger into the air and feeling deep down where the cold is. We can get understanding from God by feeling deep down in prayer and seeking his direction.

It’s all a bit mysterious, but God wants us to seek Him daily.
