Daylight Savings Time began during World War One as a means to save fuel needed to supply electricity. The Germans decided to add one hour at the end of the day to allow more sunlight and therefore decrease the use of electricity at night. The idea spread across Europe and eventually across most of the world. To Christians, Daylight Savings also marks the time when things start coming back to life, and God will begin to water the earth and make things grow! Today, we will make a watering can greeting card Spring craft that holds seed packets to remind people that after a long season, we will start to see God’s hand really moving in nature again!
Daylight Savings & Spring Craft: Watering Can Greeting Card
Buy flower seed packets. These are available in most grocery stores or garden stores. Also bring in old greeting cards that have one part of the inside without lettering.
- Seed packets, one for each child
- Crayon or flow pens
- Light weight cardboard
- Construction paper (pastel colors)
- Lightweight cardboard or heavy paper (The unlettered insides of old Christmas, Birthday, or other greeting cards can be used)
1) Cut construction paper to the size of most greeting cards (approx. 5×7″) 2) Draw a picture of a watering can on the construction paper. Fill the entire space with the watering can. Many examples can be found online or in Word Clip Art. 3) Put paste all around the edges of the picture and paste the picture on a piece of lightweight cardboard that has a clear back. 4) Cut a slit about 3 inches from bottom of the picture to make a pocket for the seed packets. 5) Place a flower seed packet in the slit. 6) On the back of the card write “When Daylight Savings Time means God’s plants will start to grow soon!” 7) Take cards home to give to someone special.
We might grumble about losing an hour of sleep when we set our clocks ahead, but our reward will be having light instead of darkness for more hours of the day. It’s a chance to think about God’s creation and what lies ahead! As Genesis 1:11-12 states, God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seedbearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” We’ll get to see his magical powers at work again very shortly – now that Daylight Savings Time is here!
