This science experiment with rain clouds and colored water can help children think about how God takes care of his beautiful creation, while helping them learn about what keeps clouds in the air! It will also give you a chance to reflect on how April showers are like those periods where we have to wait on God. He is coming and his love will shine through in his good season!
Science Experiment : Rain Clouds Can Show Us the Beauty of God’s Creation
Materials
– Clear containers
– Water
– Droppers
– Cups
– Food coloring in various colors
– Shaving cream
Steps
– Fill some cups with water colored with the food coloring.
– Fill clear containers with water.
– Spray shaving cream on top the cups of clear water.
– Ask the children to fill droppers with colored water and add drops to the top of the shaving cream.
– What happens to the shaving cream?
Explanation
Clouds hover in the sky because they are made up of water droplets. When the water is warm, it turns the droplets into water vapor that floats, because water vapor weighs less than air. Once the droplets start to cool they get heavy and fall back down to the ground. Like the water vapor in the sky, the shaving cream is lighter than the water, so it floats! But when we add the water droplets to it, they are heavy so they fall through the shaving cream and down to the “ground,” just like the heavy droplets in a cloud!
Understanding God
God takes care of us by providing different temperatures, seasons, and water for the plants we need.
In the same way, through all those April showers, we should keep in mind that sun is part of God’s plan too, and the sun will come out again! Don’t be dismal when God makes you wait for something. As sure as the sun comes out for summer, God’s love and blessings will flow to you – in his good season.
Psalm 147:7-8 says it like this: Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praises on the harp to our God, who covers the heavens with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the mountains.
