The Bible says that God would rather us be hot or cold than lukewarm. This is like saying he wants all or nothing. Don’t bother being lukewarm. This Bible science experiment will demonstrate that the spirit can melt the coldest heart and lift it out of sin.
• Large glass, bowl, or container
• Twelve-inch pieces of string
1. Fill the bowl with water.
2. Drop some ice cubes in the water.
3. Ask the kids to try and pick up the ice using only the string.
4. Then lay the string over the ice cubes and spoon some salt over the top.
5. Pull on the string. The ice should be stuck to it and lift out of the water.
Salt lowers the freezing point of water. When you poured the salt over the ice cube, it lowered the melting point of the ice. The salt melted a thin layer of the ice cube. Then the water cooled very quickly and re-froze making the string freeze to the ice cube.
In Revelation 3:14-16, Jesus made this all-or-nothing statement to the Church of Laodicea: “I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other. So because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth!”
“Lukewarm” describes Christians who don’t really care all that much about their faith or about Jesus. They’re just going through the motions.
It can seem like certain people will never come to have “hot” faith in Jesus. We should never give up praying for these people. Our friends that seem too tough for Jesus are the ice cubes. The string is faith. It can seem like the two will never stick together. But if you add some prayer (the salt) you can see even the coldest person can be lifted up to Jesus.
A person can become hot — giving Jesus his all — because with God, all things are possible.
