Using the Four Spiritual Laws at New Year’s
It is always important for people to hear the Gospel, but the start of the New Year is a great opportunity to speak of beginning a new life in Christ. The New Year is about starting fresh with hope, and for kids who have not heard the salvation message, now is a great time.
Explain the Gospel using the Four Spiritual Laws: Jesus said in Mark 10:15, “”¦whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” The gospel is definitely easy enough for kids to understand the basics. The Four Spiritual Laws always help, and while the wording may be simplified for children, the concept is the same:
1. God loves mankind and created man to be His friends: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
2. Man decided to do wrong things and that made God sad, because He couldn’t be close to man anymore. He is too good. He wants to be close, but we still do wrong stuff and have wrong thoughts, all of us sometimes. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Rom. 3:23); “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your “God,” (Isaiah 59:2).
3. God made a way to be close to man again. He sent Jesus to stand in our place and die for our sins. Anyone who believes Jesus took away their sins– past, present and future–can be God’s friend again. But that’s the only way God provided. You can’t get friendly with Him just by trying to be good; you’ll just mess up again. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14:6); “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us,” (Rom. 5:8).
4. We must individually receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. Everyone is invited to do so. But you have to “sign on” with Him. It’s a decision. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,” (John 1:12); “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved,” (Rom. 10:9); “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God,” (Eph. 2:8).
Encourage kids to start out the New Year by making the most important decision of their lives – to accept Jesus as their Lord and get to be God’s friend!
New Year’s Scriptures
Here are some further Scriptures for New Year’s that encourage a constant reliance on God in order to grow strong and be good:
BE STRONG AND LET YOUR HEART TAKE COURAGE,
ALL YOU WHO WAIT FOR AND HOPE FOR AND EXPECT THE LORD.
BY HAVING THE EYES OF YOUR HEART FLOODED WITH LIGHT,
SO THAT YOU CAN KNOW AND UNDERSTAND
THE HOPE TO WHICH HE HAS CALLED YOU,
AND HOW RICH IS HIS GLORIOUS INHERITANCE
IN THE SAINTS (HIS SET–“APART ONES).
THEREFORE, SINCE WE ARE SURROUNDED
BY SUCH A GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES,
LET US THROW OFF EVERYTHING THAT HINDERS
AND THE SIN THAT SO EASILY ENTANGLES,
AND LET US RUN WITH PERSEVERANCE
THE RACE MARKED OUT FOR US.
FORGET THE FORMER THINGS;
DO NOT DWELL ON THE PAST.
SEE, I AM DOING A NEW THING!
NOW IT SPRINGS UP;
DO YOU NOT PERCEIVE IT?
I AM MAKING A WAY
IN THE WILDERNESS AND STREAMS
IN THE WASTELAND.
THOU WILT KEEP HIM IN PERFECT PEACE,
WHOSE MIND IS STAYED ON THEE…
IF I GO UP TO THE HEAVENS,
YOU ARE THERE;
IF I MAKE MY BED IN THE DEPTHS,
YOU ARE THERE.
